Colour, Composition, and Voice: Rebel Schoolgirl

Colour, Composition, and Voice
The theme of my final design is "rebel schoolgirl". I was inspired to create an editorial look paying tribute to typical uniform styles, silhouettes, accessories, etc., while bringing a sense of angst and edginess to the table, to push past boundaries.
5 Iterations
Before creating five iterations of an editorial look, I drew a basic figure of the body as a base, and added the pieces I later drew on top. Each of the iterations included similar pieces, but varied in length and different mixes of pieces; the garments remaining in each iteration were a blazer-styled jacket and a button-up dress shirt, including the same buttons, and the bottoms maintained the same waist-line for the shorts, skirts, and pants. Drawing these iterations helped me see many options, and I was able to pick the one I saw best fit with the theme of rebel schoolgirl. When deciding on colour and fabric choices for the selected look, I knew if I ended up changing my mind on which look I wanted to go with, it would be an easy switch; the colourways and fabrics could be implemented into any of the looks, as they consisted of similar garments and embellishments. Below are the five sketched iterations, including notes for the chosen look; I knew I did not need to include the notes for each iteration, as they apply to all of the pieces in the looks.
Final Design
Based on the iterations, below is my final design. I selected this look, as not only do all of the pieces adhere to the theme of rebel schoolgirl, but the shorts push past the boundary even further; women are normally told to wear a skirt in a uniform setting, whereas men are left with wearing shorts or pants. It is important to recognize that clothing should be genderless; this look could be worn by any gender.
Tutorials Used in the Process
In order to create my editorial illustration, I first watched a video of a live model drawing class. I wanted to get a better sense of proportions before drawing a figure; I watched this video a few times, practicing doing quick sketches to get into the groove of drawing an individual. After practicing basic figure drawing, I viewed a video of someone explaining their overall drawing process when it comes to using Procreate. They went over many tools, which I found to be helpful later on when I was creating my digital rendering. I am not new to using Procreate, but this video definitely taught me some new tools to use, which I will carry into my drawing in the future.
